A Filter press is a highly efficient, compact, dewatering device for separating solids from liquid slurries in the form of compressed cake. Its major components are a structured framework, filter chambers (formed by recess portion of Recessed plate system, or frames in plate and frame system), and filter cloth.

Filter press technology although very basic in nature, but its application is as important to the various processes it serves, as is a simple wheel to the motive machines. Filter Press are separation devices used for solid or liquid separation that work on feed pressure or squeeze pressure to reduce liquid content in process or waste slurries or to reduce solid content in a product.

Recessed Filter Presses :
Recessed-plate filter presses are used to remove water from liquid wastewater residuals and produce a non-liquid material referred to as “cake”. Dewatered cake varies in consistency from that of custard (12 to15 percent solids) to moist soil (20 to 40 percent solids) and is used for the following purposes:

  • To reduce volume, saving money on storage and transportation.
  • To eliminate free liquids prior to landfill disposal.
  • To reduce fuel requirements if the residuals are to be incinerated or further dried.
  • To produce a material with sufficient void space and volatile solids for composting when blended with a bulking agent.
  • To reduce pooling or runoff, which can be a problem when liquid biosolids are land applied.
  • To optimize alkaline stabilization processes.
Recessed-plate filter presses are among the oldest types of dewatering devices and can produce the highest cake solids concentration of any mechanical dewatering equipment (Kemp, 1997). They are more commonly used in industrial applications than in municipal wastewater facilities.

Polypropylene Filter Plates & Frames:
The chambers of filter press are formed by combining Polypropylene filter plates and frames. This creates chambers of 5 - 40 mm, depending on frame thickness. Plate and frame type filter presses are suitable for pre-coating filtration, which in the beverage industry, is used for clear filtration.

Chamber Plates:
The chambers formed between plates when the filter remains in a closed position, retain the solids to be held in the filter cloths which cover the totality of the plates. The filtrate outlet is continuous in open or closed output. The dehydrated cakes formed inside the chambers fall down when the plates are separated during the discharge cycle.

Filter Elements:
A filter press consists of a series of horizontally arranged vertical filter elements (filter plates in recessed plate system, or plates and frames arranged in 1232 sequence, in plate and frame system), each covered with paper, felt medium or synthetic woven material. A mechanical structure called skeleton is used to support the filter plates and a closure mechanism provides the required force on the sealing faces of the plates to counteract the applied force of filtration (squeezing).
